A J Mayr and Leighton India to establish a state of the art fabrication facility in India

Media Release

May 28, 2007

International contractor and project developer Leighton India and Australia’s Newcastle based engineering company A J Mayr have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a state of the art fabrication facility in India.

Leighton India is a subsidiary of Leighton Holdings which is Australia’s largest construction group.

A J Mayr has grown significantly since it was acquired by the Perumal family in 2001.

Leighton and A J Mayr announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that will see a large scale operation established on the West coast of India.

It will design and engineer products for domestic Indian projects as well as international clients in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Arabian Gulf region.

The new facility will cater for, but will not be limited to, offshore structures, high specification and high quality structures for buildings, process and infrastructure applications, pressure vessels, tanks and piping.

Leighton has secured over US$600 million of new work in the past two years, and the potential for companies with a reputation for quality was huge.

David Savage, Managing Director of Leighton Asia (Southern), said the new contracts highlighted the opportunities available for an international company with a reputation for quality, safety and coming in on budget.

“There is a clear push for high quality work in India. Clients are demanding world-class construction standards and we are in a great position to provide it for them,” he said.

Mr Perumal said the location of A J Mayr and Leighton India’s new facility was being finalised. We have identified a number of sites and, at present, we are talking with the appropriate government agencies for approval to build, own and operate. Once that is finalised it will be straight into construction of the facility.”
