British High Commissioner Visits A J Mayr

The quality and scope of work being carried out by AJ Mayr has attracted the attention of the British Government.

In September The Rt Hon Mrs Helen Lawrie Liddell, Britain's High Commissioner to Australia, toured the company's site at Tomago to inspect work being carried out on behalf of clients such as Foster Wheeler and BOC.

Mrs Liddell took up her position as British High Commissioner in July 2005.

AJ Mayr Executive Director Nilhan Perumal said Mrs Liddell's interest in visiting the company's facilities was recognition of the work the AJ Mayr team was performing.

"Mrs Liddell's visit is of significance to us," he said. We are very proud of our team and what we are achieving. And, to be honest, we are quite proud to have been given the opportunity to host such a dignitary as Mrs Liddell.

"We have done quite a number of large assignments for British clients and we look forward to continuing to do so well into the future."

During the tour, Mrs Liddell met and spoke with many AJ Mayr team members throughout the administration areas and work shops and yards.

Mrs Liddell is a former British Cabinet Minister, and was elected to parliament in 1994. Three years later, and with Labor's election to power, she began her ministerial career.

She served as Economic Secretary to the Treasury from 1997 to 1998, Deputy Secretary of State for Scotland and Minister for Education from 1998-1999 and was briefly a Transport Minister. She later became Minister of State for Energy and Competitiveness in Europe, a post she held until joining the Cabinet in 2001 when she became the first woman Secretary of State for Scotland.
